Is Penmon Point, Anglesey dog friendly?

Penmon Point, part of Anglesey’s coast, is a stunning area of natural beauty that we like to fondly refer to as a part of 'Real Wales,' - it’s one of those spots that has the combination of everything that makes Wales truly magnificent, featuring awe-inspiring views of the tumultuous sea and rustic hillsides, and providing opportunities to witness wildlife and embrace adventure. And, what’s even better is its beach and costal walks are dog friendly all year round.

It's a destination worth exploring on both the sunniest and coldest of days. We love taking our dog on days which we like to call ‘moody’ where the skies have a grey atmospheric feel and the sea is blowing from ‘all four corners of the heavens’.

It's important to mention that Penmon Point is not your typical beach; instead, it boasts a rocky terrain and is not sand based and is not a spot for swimming. There is also no life guard service here. However, this doesn't mean you can't spend a day here enjoying the scenic views, strolling along the coastline pathways, having a picnic, exploring the rock pools (when the tide isn’t high) and even fishing.

If you are looking for a day out basking sand and swimming, you could visit Newborough Beach & Llanddwyn Island also on Anglesey’s coastline.

So what exactly is at Penmon Point?

Apart from its captivating atmosphere, Penmon Point offers clear views of the Trwyn Du Lighthouse, also known as Penmon Lighthouse, views of Puffin Island, and, during the summer months, the chance to spot dolphins. Additionally, the fluorescent algae often appearing here during the summer time, lighting up the sea and making it a photographers dream.  It’s also classed as a night sky spot and is known for its sightings of the Northern Lights. If you’re a bird lover it’s also an excellent bird-watching location and you can fish here too.

It terms of facilities, there is parking which is paid up front at a toll road costing £3.50, and a café which has toilets. These toilets are for customers only.

In essence, if you're seeking an atmospheric day out with your four-legged friend, Penmon Point is the place to visit.

If all the above is not enticing enough for you and your pooch to want to venture over to Penmon point , there’s more… before you enter the toll road to Penmon Point there are also ruins for you and your dog to explore. You’ll find the Penmon Priory , Cross and St Seiriol’s Well here, which can help to give you you a bit more understanding of the areas history.

Can you visit Puffin Island from Penmon Point?

If you and your canine companion enjoy water adventures, consider kayaking over to Puffin Island (bring your own equipment as there is no rental available) and note that you actually need permission to land on Puffin Island so you’d need to stay in your Kayak. It’s also important not to disturb the local wildlife including the seals that beach up on Puffin Island and swim in the surrounding waters.

Dog friendly Puffin Island boat tours

Alternatively, if that doesn't suit you, you can take a dog-friendly boat tour which depart from Beaumaris Pier. We haven’t yet taken this adventure with our dog yet, but you tour provider Seacoast Safaris appear to take onboard well behaved dogs.

In summary, Penmon Point offers a diverse range of attractions, from historical ruins to breathtaking views and wildlife encounters. It's a gem in North Wales that deserves a spot on your dog friendly travel itinerary.
