Llyn Elsi Reservoir Walk, Betws Y Coed

Updated: Mar 8

A fabulous dog friendly walk in Betws Y Coed

If you find yourself in Betws y Coed, the Llyn Elsi reservoir is a lovely, dog-friendly, circular walk just out of the way of all the hustle and bustle of the village.

Llyn Elsi Reservoir on a sunny day

The path takes you to some stunning views of the mountain ranges of Careneddau and the Glyderau - all part of Snowdonia National park.

Walking level: the walk around the Llyn Elsi itself is moderate, however, the path to get there is pretty steep and can be intense if you're not used to hiking.

Time to walk: approx 2 - 3 hours, however, we also stopped for a picnic!

Busyness: Low - medium depending on the time of year

Parking – There isn't anywhere specific but the Railway car park (pay and display) is just across the road (to the left) of St May's church where your walk begins. The car park address is: Station Rd, Betws-y-Coed LL24 0AE Facilities – none when you get up there, but plenty of facilities in the village which is where you start and finish the walk

On or off lead walk – Off lead

Address: The walk starts behind St Mary's Church, Holyhead Rd, Betws-y-Coed LL24 0AA

How to find the start of the walk from the village: The walk is super easy to get to no matter how you travel into Betws y Coed, it's close to car parks, bus stops and the train station. Head towards St Mary's church which is on the edge of the village, behind the church, you'll find a forest track, with markers, from her start your walk upwards.

The first part of the walk is the steepest, this is where you will start and finish. You'll be taken through forestry, for 15-20 minutes and then you'll find the hardest part of the whole walk is done with.

From here, you can just follow the pathway. As it's a circular walk you can choose to go left or right and you should be brought back to the exact same spot by the end. The pathways are a mixture of stone, grassy and in some cases muddy.

You'll find patches of grass to stop and have a break, last time we were there we found a really cute stop by the water to have a picnic. You might even bump into some 'cold water swimmers!'.

Walking around, but sure to take in some of the beautiful views of the Snowdonia mountain range! Your dog will also love the mix of terrain throughout. Enjoy!
