Fall in love with water: Aber Falls in Abergwyngregyn

Updated: Mar 8

A dog friendly water fall walk in Gwynedd, North Wales

Walking level: Low – medium (medium length walk with some slight incline)

Time to walk: Approx 2 hours to get to the top and back down again

Busyness: Depends on the time of year. Summer can be extremely busy. In the summer months, we suggest going early in the morning, or late afternoon into the early evening.

Parking – Yes, there is limited pay and display parking at the start of the walk - space for approximately 30 cars. Please note at busy times the road is narrow and therefore can become congested. To avoid this the official Snowdonia website suggests the following

'it is advisable to consider using the free car park before reaching the village of Abergwyngregyn. Turn off the A55 at Junction 13 signposted Abergwyngregyn. Follow the P signs to the free car park on the left rather than follow the road up through the village.'

Facilities – Toilets, but only at the very start of the walk at the small car park

On or off lead walk – Off lead, however on occasion there are free roaming sheep to be careful of, so please ensure dogs are on a lead at these points

Any shade: This is an open walk meadow walk, meaning very little natural shading from trees or anything else

Address: AberFalls Abergwyngregyn, Llanfairfechan LL33 0LP

Is Aber Falls dog friendly?

Aberfall’s is absolutely dog friendly, it’s the perfect walk for those who like to have a purpose such as visiting a landmark on their walk, and if your dog loves water they’ll no doubt love having a paddle in the stream when you reach the falls.

Did you know Aber Falls is a water fall that is part of Snowdonia ( Yr Wydffa)?

About his dog friendly Snowdonia walk

The trail itself is pretty easy, but it just takes a bit of time to get to the waterfalls meaning a nice length of walk for your dog. When you arrive at the waterfall, you’ll want to spend some time climbing, taking in the scenery, having a picnic and listening to the falls. On a nice day, it’s very easy to lose your sense of time and your dog will have a blast running around and playing in the shallow waters.

The path to the waterfall is straightforward, you can't go wrong. There's plenty of space as the path is really wide with lots of greenery around. If you’re really lucky you’ll get to see some wild ponies along the way. It's also important to note that at some parts you may find sheep grazing, so dogs will need to be kept on a lead if you see sheep are free roaming.

Top tips

  • Bring change for the pay and display parking

  • Another great spot for children too – the grounds aren’t the flattest but you can take a pram

  • There’s no place for food or water when you get there so make sure to take some with you.

  • Bring a towel in case you (or your pooch) decide to go paddling
