Dog friendly walks and attractions in Abergele

Abergele is a charming town situated on the north coast of Wales. Steeped in history, Abergele boasts dog-friendly attractions like Gwyrch Castle, a 19th-century Gothic revival castle that adds a touch of medieval allure to the area, as well as dog-friendly beaches and parks. The town's vibrant community and welcoming atmosphere make it a delightful destination for both locals, visitors, and dogs exploring the scenic beauty of North Wales. To help you get the most out of Abergele, here’s our list of 6 dog-friendly things to do in Abergele.

Our top 6 dog friendly things to do in Abergele

1. Visit Gwyrch Castle (Abergele castle)

Gwyrch castle, Abergele by Jack B, Splash

Gwrych Castle is a captivating historic landmark with a rich history dating back to the 19th century. This enchanting castle is set amidst stunning Welsh landscapes, offering visitors a glimpse into its past through well-preserved architecture and extensive grounds. The castle warmly welcomes well-behaved dogs inside and out—meaning you and your four-legged family member can truly enjoy the beauty of this castle without the restrictions other similar castles tend to put in place—making it a unique dog-friendly attraction and one of our favourites.

A fun fact about Gwrych Castle is that it was home to "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here" while filming had to take place in the UK. And there’s still some of the set left behind, providing a perfect opportunity for a photo op with your pooch.

During the winter months, the castle has reduced opening hours, so we suggest you take a look at their website before planning your trip. Booking is also advised to prevent disappointment.

2. Run, walk and play in Pentre Mawr Park

Pentre Mawr is a fabulous park for families and their dogs to visit. Not only is there a large expanse of field to play on—perfect for off-lead playtime for your four-legged family member—but there are also other features such as a small lake, playgrounds, outdoor tennis courts, and football areas. The park is the perfect place for both dogs and children to get rid of any excess energy or just to enjoy a leisurely stroll and picnic.

3. Visit Abergele & Pensarn Beach

Abergele has its own promenade and beach named Pensarn Beach, and it’s within easy walking distance from the centre of Abergele and the train station. It’s a delightful shingle beach that has dog-friendly sections year-round. As a guide, there is a seasonal ban on a small area between May 1st and 30th September on the section between the wooden posts by the café and concrete posts at the western end of the promenade. Dogs are allowed on the rest of the beach year-round.

The beach boasts a promenade with facilities such as toilets, a shop, and a seasonal café. The promenade itself is a lovely stroll to take with your dog on lead.

Activities here include swimming, canoeing, and surfing, but please note that this is not a beach that has a lifeguard.

4. Head for Tower Hill and admire the view on the way up

If you and your four-legged friend are looking to stretch your legs and take in some fresh air and scenery, then the walk up to the tower on Tower Hill, Abergele, is just the dog-friendly walk for you. The walk will take you uphill through lush woodland, with places to stop for a pause to take in the breath taking views of the surrounding hills, and up again until you get to the historic tower itself.

This walk is approximately a 2.5-mile round trip (can be longer if you decide to take a different route), starting uphill, so make sure you’re dressed for the adventure and ready for the incline. You can find out more about how to get there on our blog.

5. Grab a coffee and let your dog play in the PetPlace indoor dog park

The PetPlace in Abergele is a unique pet store designed completely with dogs and their humans in mind. Inside the PetPlace store, you’ll find the indoor dog park and cafe. It’s probably more for locals or anyone who thinks they’ll be visiting the area regularly, as there is a membership fee to use it. But it can also be a godsend on those rainy days when you’re looking for something for you and your pooch to do indoors. It’s a great place for socializing for your dog, and for you too.

Also, it’s worth noting, if you're visiting the area and desperately need to give your pooch a clean, you’ll also find do-it-yourself pet washing stations here as well.

6. Walk the Castle View Trail

The Castle View Walk is a dog-friendly uphill and wooded stroll that lives up to its name by offering splendid views of Gwrych Castle, along with other picturesque landscapes. Conveniently accessible from the town centre or with limited parking at the base, this walk has not only historical charm but also an inviting ambiance, perfect for those seeking tranquillity.

The Castle View Walk has several trails to explore, each with its own unique appeal. Opting for the circular route, which takes approximately one and a half hours, promises a satisfying experience for casual strollers. Pet owners will be pleased to know that dogs are welcome off-lead. However, be aware that there are a couple of sections of the walk where sheer drops may be present. If your furry companion tends to wander, a mindful approach is advised to ensure their safety. Fortunately, the majority of the walk is secure, allowing both humans and their four-legged friends to enjoy the journey without worry.
